Four of the five matches in the Chamblee Bulldogs Class 5A boys’ state semifinals matchup with the McIntosh Chiefs went all three sets including the deciding match that propelled McIntosh into the state finals at Blackburn Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Chamblee (11-4) fell behind 0-1 early in the only match to not go three sets as McIntosh’s Gavin Mullen defeated Chamblee’s Landan Marcus 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles duo of William Hackney and Alex Coursey rallied from a 5-7 loss in the opening set against McIntosh’s Andrew Deng and Ayaan Popatiya to even the match at 1-1. Hackney and Coursey sept the final two sets 6-4 and 6-2 with Hackney serving for the match he hit a service winner.

McIntosh’s No. 2 doubles returned the favor as Zehn Yu Yang and Sachin Subramanian rallied from a 6-4 first set win by Chamblee’s Owen Flake and Sid Hore to take the final two sets to put McIntosh ahead 2-1 in the match. McIntosh’s duo pulled out a 6-3 win in the second set to tie the match 1-1.

Yang and Subramanian jumped out 5-2 in the third and deciding set only to have Flake and Hore rally back to take a 6-5 advantage with Flake serving for the match.

A break of Flake tied the match at 6-6 and sent it to the tiebreaker.

The tiebreaker was knotted at 5-5 when the McIntosh pair got a call overturned to take a 6-5 lead and then took the next point to win the match.

Chamblee’s Kavi Pallan and McIntosh’s Krish Sarin had split sets at No. 3 singles with Pallan winning the first 6-4 and Sarin matching him with a 6-4 win in the second set to knot the match at one set each.

Sarin was up 3-2 when momentum shifted to Pallan as he moved head 4-3. Pallan would go on to a 6-4 win to even the team match at 2-2.

The match was then in the hands of both teams’ No. 1 singles players that had split sets. McIntosh’s William Pullin won the opening set 6-2 before Chamblee’s Jacob Dorland pulled out a 7-5 win to knot the match at one set apiece.

Dorland fell behind 4-3 before breaking Pullin to take the lead in the set at 5-4. Pullin rallied to win the final three games to pull out a 7-5 win to seal the victory for McIntosh.
